COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: HEARING LOSS AND SELF-DEVELOPMENT

On September 21, 2024, Ms. Duong Phuong Hanh - Director of the Center for Research and Education of the the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) consulted with a hard of hearing person and her family about "Hearing loss and self-development - How to achieve certain achievements in life."

Parent's concerns:

- Daughter has grown up and has a stable job in a public organization; is recognized for her ability at work; but she still needs support from her colleagues due to limited hearing. How to listen better to work better?

- How to take the TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS English test.

According to Ms. Hanh, to listen better, two factors need to be considered: the desire to develop listening skills or to equip better listening support tools. If the individual confirms a long-term commitment to the current stable job, practice to develop listening skills. If the individual plans to develop herself in another environment where English is a mandatory skill, equipping herself with a listening device such as a cochlear will be useful.

Regarding the English certificate exam, the British Council supports test takers with hearing loss by sitting close to the speaker, listening in person to read lip signals, or having support for speech-to-text interpretation. TOEFL has an ITP type suitable for people with hearing loss.
