CAREER ORIENTATION: EMPLOYMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS
On January 09, 2025, the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) welcomed representatives of the international coffee shop brand in Vietnam for a meeting about recruiting and training people with hearing loss in baristas serving at the coffee shop.
The employer's expectation is to hire employees with hearing loss who have the desire to work, love bartending and serving, being honest, diligent, eager to learn, agile, having good communication skills (focus reading – comprehension and writing), good emotional management and having basic skills in English. Servers with hearing loss will perform the following tasks such as Receiving order; preparing and serving dishes; taking care of customers and the coffee shop; and receiving customers’ payments.
Through the meeting, CED helped employers understand people with hearing loss (Deaf, Hard of Hearing, late Deafened): their competencies; how to communicate with them (speech, sign language, writing, images, videos, and other visible aids), and communication skills with the people with hearing loss in the working environment.
CED sincerely thanks the employer for their interest in learning about the employment needs of people with hearing loss. The attention and learning from employers will be the bridges to help the people with hearing loss to be listened, understood, and have the opportunity to build a good life and contribute to society.
