STEM: DESIGNING AQUARIUM MADE OF PLASTIC WASTE
On July 6, 2023, at the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED), the students of STEM class had a lesson on "Designing aquarium made of plastic waste".
Attending the session were also Mr. Le Anh Vu - Visiting Lecturer of Ton Duc Thang University and 6 students of the university who are doing internship at the Center.
The session did not delve into knowledge of Physics (principle of interconnected vessels, liquid pressure), and concerning only easy-to-find materials: Making aquariums (5 l plastic bottles), making miniatures (0.5 l plastic bottles, candle glue, 5w submersible pump, colored pebbles, plastic straws). The students were divided into 2 groups and were instructed:
- to observe the model and how to operate the model.
- Each group designed the model according to their creativity.
After designing the model, next came the operation for the water wheel of the miniature. Both groups encountered difficulties due to errors in assembly techniques. After a while of discussion, the error points of the two groups were rectified in the applause of everyone there.
The above STEM lessons are one of the enthusiastic plans of the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) team. In addition to limiting plastic waste into the environment, the session also trained students on judgment, problem solving, teamwork skills. We hope that the aquarium and vivid miniatures made by themselves would help them reduce stress after studying and working.
We would like to thank the teacher, Mr. Le Anh Vu for taking the time to attend the lesson. The presence of the teacher and his sincere encouragement would help the students become more confident in themselves and strive harder to integrate into the community.
