COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS AND LIFE SKILLS
On September 6, 2024, Ms. Duong Phuong Hanh - Director of the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) had a consultation session for a deaf person and her brother on life skills when suffering from hearing loss.
Her issues:
- Confident, good life experience (10 years of working experience), quick-witted, eager to learn, ... but still cannot keep a job.
- Want to improve reading and writing skills to read books and newspapers, and self-study. According to Ms. Hanh,
- Need to practice patience, listening skills, and openness to communication with colleagues. For example, if a colleague asks, no matter what she is doing, she needs to stop to respond.
- To be able to read books and newspapers and self-study, she needs to have a minimum reading comprehension ability and a habit. Her family can help her develop reading skills as follows:
+ Create a reading habit: her brother reads with her.
+ Select reading content: related to the field of work she is interested in or wanting to improve and update her knowledge that helps her work.
+ Reading comprehension: based on some of the most general specific questions to understand the content of the reading in the simplest way. Take notes of good sentence patterns.
+ Practice writing through exercises such as answering “why” questions, texting with relatives and friends, and writing a diary.
