SHARING ON SKILLS OF COMMUNICATION WITH PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS FOR HOTEL AND RESTAURANT STAFF
With the wish for employees to learn about and have the opportunity to experience communication with people with hearing loss, Des Arts Saigon Hotel coordinated with the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) to organize a communication experience session with people with hearing loss (Deaf, Hard of Hearing) for 22 employees at Des Arts Saigon Hotel.
In the preliminary assessment at the beginning of the class, 40% of the participants said they had ever interacted with a person with hearing loss, and their self-assessed level of mutual understanding when communicating ranged from 30% - 40%. And 20% of the participants said they had ever supported/served people with hearing loss at hotels and restaurants. And 80% of participants do not know sign language and how to communicate with people with hearing loss.
Coming to the experience session, CED designed and guided the participants in the following activities:
- Learning about types of hearing loss and how to communicate with people with hearing loss (Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late Deafened)
- Game "Sign language thinking like a Deaf person"
- Communication using sign language in the restaurant.
With the active participation and high learning spirit of the participants and enthusiastic guidance from Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Trang (Deaf teacher), practical sharing from Ms. To Thi Bich Phuong - Deputy Director of CED on communicating with people with hearing loss, a vibrant and interesting experience space has been created. More than 95% of participants felt very satisfied with the content and communication method of the experiential session. Participants also said that the experience was "very good and meaningful", "learning was fun and they learned many new words," and “interesting, fun, helpful”.
CED sincerely thanks the Board of Directors and class organizers of Des Arts Saigon Hotel for their interest in learning about communication with people with hearing loss and for coordinating and carefully preparing for the session. The attention and understanding from the participants will be bridges that help connect normal hearing people and people with hearing loss together, helping them to be heard, understood, and accompanied on the path of integration and contribution to society.
