AWARENESS ON DISABILITY IS ESSENTIAL

Problem: “Hospitals are not friendly to people with hearing loss.” (Comments received from the workshop organized by CED).

Sharing: Assessment of friendliness in hospitals may be subjective because there is a lack of basis to evaluate “What is friendliness”. Friendliness may come from being able to communicate:

- People with hearing loss need to tell that they loss hearing to facilitate their communication and because “openness is important.”

- Medical staffs need to be shared about the difficulties in communication of people with hearing loss; they need to be trained on communication skills; and they should have time to show their cares,…

CED is implementing the project “Promoting the initial legal support and implementation of regulations on medical examination and treatment for people with hearing loss (deaf, hard of hearing and deafened)”, sponsored by EU through JIFF-Oxfam:

- Raising awareness for people with hearing loss on their rights; right understanding and asking for help when going to hospitals for medical examination and treatment.

- Raising awareness, skills for medical staffs, supporting and building capacity for hospitals to implement the criteria A2.5.

- Advocating for the Code of Criteria to be added facilities/tools in assisting people with hearing loss,… The ultimate goal is to make the hospital environment friendly as there is positive awareness from both sides: medical staffs and people with hearing loss.

Recommendation from CED: Introducing the course “Skills for Assisting People with Hearing Loss in hospitals” into the training program for Bachelor degree in Social Work and Public Health.
