DRAWING SESSION – GRASSHOPPERS
On February 2, 2023, the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) had a meaningful drawing session for students with hearing loss. The topic of the preparatory class was: Grasshoppers. This was a familiar image and very close to the village scene in Vietnam.
At first, she showed the students a drawing that she had drawn. Through close and detailed observation, she guided the basic lines for students to shape and adjust the size to fit the A4 paper frame. Due to the 1-1 tutoring, she could talk directly with the students about the image recognition of the grasshoppers, through which she also developed more thinking in communicating with the children while referring to where they live, what is their food. Some students replied that they did not know because their opportunities to interact with their surroundings were still very limited. From that, she expanded the knowledge by introducing the grasshopper, where they live, in grasslands or bushes and their food which were young grass or young shoots.
Particularly for STEM students, to show the diversity of drawings, she allowed them to search for pictures on the internet for reference. This was an innovation in her communication method with students, instead of drawing a uniform and imposing image that would cause a feeling of constriction and framework for them.
