3rd of March is World Hearing Day: Don

Many people in the world live with an untreated hearing loss. This year, the theme for the WHO World Hearing Day is “Don't let hearing loss limit you. Hearing for life”. A debate at the European parliament on the occasion of World Hearing Day will be held on the 4th of March.

 

World Hearing Day is held on the 3rd of March each year by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to raise awareness of how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and to promote ear and hearing care across the world. In relation to World Hearing Day, many events will take place all over the world to increase the awareness of hearing loss and hearing loss treatment.

 

In the world today, there is a huge gap between the number of people who live with hearing loss and the number of people who use hearing instruments such as hearing aids and hearing implants. According to the WHO, on a global basis, 83% of those in need of hearing instruments do not use them.

 

 

Debate at the European Parliament

 

On the occasion of World Hearing Day, a lunch debate under the World Hearing Day theme “Don't let hearing loss limit you. Hearing for life” will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels, on the 4th of March. The debate will be hosted by MEP Maria Spyraki (Greece, EPP) and co-host MEP Alex Agius Saliba (Malta, S&D)

 

The topics and speakers are:

• Hearing for life. Don’t let hearing loss limit you – Shelly Chadha (WHO, officer prevention of deafness and hearing loss)
• The relationship between hearing loss, hearing care and activity level … experience from Norway from the user perspective – Morten Buan (EFHOH, board member & HoH organisation Norway, president)
• The use of hearing aids and cochlear implants related to participation, depression and stigma – Patrick D’Haese (Hear-it, chairman)
• Burn-out and the possible relationship between disabilities – hearing loss and burn-out – Steffie Desart (Developer Burnout Assessment Tool; Idewe, prevention advisor psychosocial aspects)
• Study on the relationship between hearing loss, hearing care and pre-burn-out signals and overall functionality – Mark Laureyns (AEA, president)

The lunch debate will take place at the European Parliament in Brussels, Wednesday the 4th of March from 12.30 to 14.30 in Room JAN 2Q2.
