“THE MEDIA - SAY NO WITH GENDER STEREOTYPES”

On September 10, 2023, Mr. Danh Minh Tri represented the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED) to participate in the forum “Communication - Say no to gender stereotypes”. This workshop is one of the activities under the Project “Youth’s participation in addressing gender bias and promoting gender equality funded by the European Union (EU) through Oxfam Vietnam, and organized by Institute for Research on Development Communication.

At the forum, experts said that gender stereotypes still exist in advertising and media products, “even though women hold leadership roles, they are still expected to take care of the family”.

Experts have also compiled 6 reasons why those prejudices exist such as:

  • Policy;
  • The proportion of female senior leaders in the management apparatus is still low;
  • Penalty regulations are not strict for using gender-sensitive images in media products;
  • Self-prejudice and external prejudice of media makers;
  • Women’s accessible capacity to resources in different fields;
  • Factors related to women's decision-making rights in family, society and community.

In the forum, experts have compiled 7 solutions such as:

- Do not take gender issues seriously.

- Gender awareness is always changing, so it is necessary to continuously update information.

- Do not "fight" but exploit prejudices with inheritance and positivity to reorient to correct values.

- Integrate gender knowledge into education and training programs.

- Conduct in-depth research to identify barriers and make appropriate policy recommendations.

- Post images that are respectful,

- Create favorable conditions for each gender in accessing resources.

A truly useful event. CED sincerely thanks the Organizing Committee for connecting with CED.
