STEM: MAKING MAGNIFYING GLASS
On February 23, 2023, at the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED), the students of STEM class had a practice session "Making magnifying glass"
During the practice session, students were instructed to:
- Make their own magnifying glass with simple, easy-to-find ingredients: used bottles of purified water/soft drink bottles/glasses of milk tea, bamboo sticks, glue gun, candle glue (could be replaced with 502 glue) but the durability of the magnifying glass will not good).
- The teacher did not delve into the physics of magnifying glass (converging lens, diverging lens, focal length...), only instructing the steps and usage.
- Procedure: the teacher divided the class into two groups and did the following steps in turn:
+ Step 1: Cut off the sealed part of the bottle cap (make a glass frame)
+ Step 2: Cut in the body of the bottle 2 circles with the diameter of the bottle cap (for eyepieces)
+ Step 3: Glued 2 circles to the bottle cap, leaving a small hole to pump water in
+ Step 4: Used glue to seal the small hole, stick the bamboo stick in.
Both groups did the same in steps 1,2,4, only group one glued 2 concave faces, group two glued 2 convex faces to compare and drawing conclusions (double-concave glass for far-sight magnifying, double convex glass for close-up magnifying).
Through the practice session, the students were trained in concentration, seriousness in learning, teamwork skills, problem solving skills, forming critical thinking and a sense of limiting plastic waste out to the environment.
