EXTRACURRICULAR SESSION – WATCHING MOVIE “CODA – CHILD OF DEAF ADULTS”
On September 15, 2023 at the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED)
STEM students had an extracurricular session – watching movie “Coda – Child of Deaf Adults”.
“CODA - Child of Deaf Adults” (Vietnamese: Giai Điệu Con Tim). It’s a story about Ruby Rossi, she was born in a family with her father, mother and older brother were deaf people. As Ruby could hear very well, she helped as the only bridge between her family and community. This responsibility sometimes becomes a burden because “I have to protect them when people laugh at them but they do not hear that“ – Ruby said. Ruby had to choose between following her dream in Berklee or leaving her family struggled in the loss of connection to the outside world. The whole family encouraged Ruby in her choice of study. If there were not Ruby, they still could manage everything because in their opinion, the language that brought people closer together was the language of the heart. The end of the movie was the scene on which Ruby sang “Both Sides, Now” of Joni Mitchell and performed sign language so that her family could understand. According to the meaning of the song, Ruby and her family members come from two parallel worlds and will always accompany, now and forever.
The extracurricular session – watching movie “Coda – Child of Deaf Adults“, students were not only relaxed after class but also learn how to approach values of cultures and arts, won’t be bewilderingly when integrating into the community.
