EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY: SCENTED CANDLE MAKING – LIGHTING UP DREAMS

"Scented Candle Making – Lighting Up Dreams" was the theme of the extracurricular session held on August 19, 2026, for students in the STEM and Summer Tutoring classes at the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CED).

Instead of diving into complex physics and chemistry theories, using simple materials (beeswax, sand wax, lavender essential oil, wintergreen essential oil, 70° alcohol) and tools (alcohol burners, tripods, wire gauzes, stirring rods, glass jars, candle wicks, and wick sustainers), the students were guided to:

- Prepare materials and tools: Name the items and categorize them by their functions.

- Safety requirements: Follow safety rules during experiments, especially when working with alcohol burners.

- Procedure:

+ Control sample: Place 30g of beeswax into a heat-resistant beaker – melt it – let it cool – add 30 drops of essential oil (according to scent preference) and stir well – center the candle wick in the jar – pour the wax into the jar – wait for it to solidify.

+ Main sample: Center the candle wick in the glass jar – add the sand wax pre-infused with essential oil (infused for at least 24 hours) – design and layer creatively.

+ Observation & discussion: Observe, compare, and engage in group discussions to answer questions (e.g., Why wait for the wax to cool before adding essential oils? Compare the safety and preparation time between the control and main samples).

Through the "Scented Candle Making – Lighting Up Dreams" workshop, CED students not only gained hands-on knowledge and practical life skills, but also received the heartfelt dedication of the CED team: igniting a spark to light their path as they transition back into inclusive mainstream schools after the summer course, while sharing warmth to inspire confidence for the upcoming school year.
